NIL for parents: a starting checklist
Last reviewed Oct 31, 2026
Key takeaways
- Read your state's law page and the school's NIL policy first.
- Ask who the other party is and how they relate to the school.
- Have a qualified attorney review any contract. This site is not legal advice.
Before any conversation
Look up the school and its state on NILList. State laws differ on disclosure to the school, licensing of agents, and categories of deals that are not allowed. Each state page links to the law or the tracker we used.
Questions to ask
Who is paying, and is it an independent collective, a business, or the school? What exactly is the athlete agreeing to do, for how long, and can the agreement be ended? Does the school require the deal to be disclosed, and to whom? Is the person representing the athlete licensed where your state requires it?
Get qualified help
NIL agreements are contracts. A licensed attorney in your state can review terms, taxes and obligations. NILList does not provide legal, tax or financial advice.
